“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:21

Advent stretches from the last Sunday of November until Christmas Day—a season of stillness, longing, and sacred anticipation. It reminds us that we live between two comings: the Savior who has come, and the Savior who will come again.

This year, Pastor Sebastian Ovando, the HWI Mexico Country Director for 20 years offered a simple but profound reflection built around the five letters of Jesus’ name—one for each Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve. Each letter draws us back to the heart of the season: the person of Jesus Himself.

Below is a devotional shaped by those five letters.

J — Jubilation

Advent begins with joy—a deep, soul-rooted joy that emerges from the reality that God is with us. This joy is not tied to circumstances or holiday busyness. It’s the joy of knowing that in Jesus, God stepped toward us in love.

The angels rejoiced. The shepherds ran to witness it. Mary treasured every moment in her heart.
This is the kind of joy that steadies us in a world weighed down by uncertainty and need. It is joy given, not manufactured.

E — Esperanza (Hope)

Israel waited centuries for the Messiah. Their hope was persistent—surviving exile, silence, hunger, and hardship. Advent invites us into that same posture.

We look back with gratitude at His first coming, and forward with confidence to His return.
Hope during Advent is not passive. It is active, watchful, and expectant—forming us into people who trust that God is faithful in every season of waiting.

S — Service

At the very center of His name stands the reminder of His heart: Jesus came to serve.
His arrival in a humble manger, His life among the poor and marginalized, His compassion toward the hurting—every moment of His ministry points to a God who kneels before He commands.

We are invited to carry that same posture:
serving our families, our churches, our neighbors, and our world.
When we serve, we reflect His light.

U — Unity

Jesus gathers people who would never otherwise stand side by side. Fishermen and tax collectors. The bold and the hesitant. The broken and the whole. He makes strangers into family.

Unity is not accidental—it is intentional, sacrificial, and Spirit-shaped.
During Advent, we are reminded that the world is mended not through division, but through the love that binds us together in Him.

This season draws us closer: families reconnect, communities gather, and churches worship in one voice. Unity is both a gift and a calling.

S — Salvation

The name Jesus means “The Lord saves.”
From the manger to the cross, this is His mission.

He did not rescue from afar. He entered our world, bore our burdens, and offered Himself freely. His birth points directly toward His purpose—restoring what was lost and redeeming what was broken.

Christmas is the celebration of salvation drawing near.

Waiting With Wonder

Even as we look at the world—marked by conflict, instability, and loss—we are reminded that Advent declares a greater reality:

Light pushes back darkness.
Hope rises in unexpected places.
Christ is near.

This season calls us to pause, reflect, and remember that God has not forgotten His promises.

A Season Centered on His Name

In a world that often turns Christmas into noise and distraction, Advent gently calls us back. It reminds us that the world’s deepest need is met in one name.

As we move through the season, may the letters of His name guide our hearts:

Jubilation
Esperanza (Hope)
Service
Unity
Salvation

May His name bring peace to your home, clarity to your days, and hope to your heart this Christmas.

Come, Lord Jesus.
