It’s okay to ask “Why?”
We ask ourselves this question every day. We all know water, we all use it. We interact with it constantly, so much so that it becomes invisible. First thing in the morning you take a shower, turn on the faucet to brush your teeth and wash your hands after flushing the toilet. All with cleaner water than most of the world has to drink. Why?
The morning routine of the average American uses 20 gallons of water.
What about the rest of the world?
What would our mornings look like then? Your routine drastically changes. You get up early, gather your children and start your 3.7 mile trek to collect water. You then spend up to 6 hours carrying over 40 lbs. of water – and it’s not even clean.
Is it really good enough for them?
Absolutely not.
The theory that local people have somehow “gotten used to” their sewage-impacted water source and gained immunity to the bacteria, viruses, and parasites just isn’t true. We can’t ignore this global water crisis and the reality that last year almost a million people, mostly small children, died from waterborne disease.
It’s never “good enough” for us or them. In fact, let’s start referring to them as WE.
We all need clean water.
And we can all do something!
If you are lucky enough to be born in a place where clean water is easily accessible, then you have a leg up. This infrastructure was made possible by the hard work of those who came before you. And that’s what we’re doing. Giving these amazing people, young and old, the jumpstart that they need so that this generation and many to come, can enjoy the same rights and privileges we have now.
Everything can change!
Start believing
Water is essential to life, therefore all people should have access to safe, clean, affordable water, no matter where they are and no matter who they are. Whether it’s 100 people in a remote community or 10,000 in an urban slum, everyone should be able to drink safe, healthy water.
Let’s act now because clean water is a HUMAN RIGHT!
