At Healing Waters we believe one of God’s greatest gifts is mothers. We know they are the leaders and change makers in every community. So this weekend, we honor moms everywhere for their sacrifice, dedication and love. Because the truth is, without them, none of us would be where we are today!
At a recent staff meeting, Alex, our Country Director for the Dominican Republic, told us he owes everything he has in life to a simple conversation he had with his mom in 1999. After being told he could not go on a trip with his friends from school, Alex was angry with his mother and went to sit on the rooftop of their apartment building. Shortly after, she came up and told him that although they had the money to send him on the trip, she had decided not to give it to him, because he had made no effort to make it happen.
At the time, Alex’s family was living in a dangerous and impoverished neighborhood in the Dominican Republic. She quietly told him to look around and asked if what he saw below was the kind of life he wanted for himself and his future children. She told him that outside of his neighborhood great things awaited him, but to get there he would have to fight for what he wanted and be willing to sacrifice everything.
Since that day Alex has worked hard to build a better life for himself and his family, and to leave the confines of his old neighborhood behind. He has a good job, a beautiful wife and a newborn son. He strives to provide well for his family, and build a better future for his country. He has never forgotten the words of his mother, or how she refused to let economic constraints extinguish her hope of providing a better life for her son.
It is moms like these who are influencing the next generation, raising them up to be godly leaders with a desire to impact their communities and transform their countries.
Moms, we salute you!
“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness; Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’”
