San Ramon is a rural community located in south-central Guatemala. Home to about 100 families, San Ramon became a safe place for refugees to settle as they were fleeing violence from the Guatemalan Civil War during the early 1990s. These types of communities are common in this region of Guatemala and are comprised of individuals who are truly living off-the-grid. Due to its remote nature and lack of infrastructure, residents of San Ramon were living with zero access to safe water. They were forced to drink water from a contaminated lake which presented various health risks that we see in various regions around the world—children dying from diarrhea, severe dehydration, and chronic illness from waterborne illness.
Since a clean water project was installed in San Ramon, an amazing thing has happened—almost the entire community is drinking clean water. A local health clinic that serves the area reported a 75% reduction in treatment of gastrointestinal illness since members of the community starting drinking clean water. San Ramon is an inspiring example of the impact that can be reached when an entire community sees the value of drinking clean water. This project represents one of the purest and most impactful examples of our goal of transforming thirsting individuals into thriving communities.
It is truly an honor to partner with leaders in places like San Ramon and bring access to affordable clean drinking water. We love finding hard-to-reach areas of the world and equipping communities with resources that will bring clean water to their fellow citizens. Join us today and give clean water to more places like San Ramon—places that often fall through the cracks.
