In a small, remote community in Guatemala, twelve-year-old Theresa lives among her relatives and neighbors in Barrio Nevago, an indigenous community. Barrio Nevago has historically had little interaction with the local church and an aversion to Christian beliefs. Instead of engaging with the church, the people here often practice rituals to the founder of their community.
In the past, the local pastor, Enrique Blanco, would invite community members to his church for worship services or outreach programs, but no one would attend. Theresa was the only Christian in her family and began praying for her family regularly and searching for ways to share her faith with them. Around that time, Healing Waters began working with the church to implement a project to bring our WASH Solution to the community. Our women’s health and hygiene program, Clothed in Strength and Dignity, teaches from both Proverbs 31 and Psalm 139 and focuses on topics such as correct handwashing and how to care for sick children. But what’s unique about the program is that it’s taught in small, intimate settings that facilitate the opportunity for women to be vulnerable with each other and experience community in a way they never have before. Theresa heard about the program and asked the local health and hygiene trainer if she could attend the women’s classes, usually geared towards older women. She hoped that what she would learn would give her an opportunity to share the Gospel with her mother. Through the program, Theresa heard the trainers teaching women that there is a God who created them, knows them by name, and loves them. Theresa is now actively sharing her faith and what she has learned with her mother, father, and siblings.
Not only is the community of Barrio Nevago now able to purchase safe water at a cost all families can afford, but the members in the community have begun to see the local church as a friend. Theresa now has the resources needed to share the Gospel with her family and bring transformation to her community. During the season of Easter we reflect on Jesus’ sacrificial love poured out for the entire world. What a gift we don’t deserve!
As we continue to celebrate that safe water is now flowing throughout the community of Barrio Nevago, we invite you to join us in praying that the Living Water will be poured out through the local church and community members like young Theresa.
