Lack of Clean Water in Honduras

When it comes to a lack of access to clean water, you might think of factors like pollution, geographic location, and climate change as major causes. Most don’t realize how much the government, economy, and violence in an area can greatly affect resources and access, but this is just the case in Honduras and its neighboring countries. These issues perpetuate a cycle that is difficult to break, and it all causes and results in people going without clean water to drink and cleanse.

Of course, Honduras also faces the consequences of environmental factors influencing their clean water supply, where around 16% of the population does not have access to clean water. Even with a large number of rivers in Honduras and its location on the coastline, the number of people with access to clean water is heavily disproportionate, affecting those in rural areas more than anyone else, which we will detail more below. The lack of clean water in Honduras is a major issue where we at Healing Waters International want to help the people move beyond survival and begin to thrive by providing clean water filtration systems for all.

Remote Areas

Just like many countries struggling with water scarcity, Honduras’ rural areas are hit the hardest. Economic hardships, unfortunately, contribute to these issues as well, since many remote and rural workers abandon their agricultural-based jobs to move to urban areas where they can more easily access sources of clean water for themselves and their families. Honduras has historically depended on the agricultural industry, so without workers to fill these jobs, the economy as a whole suffers. Extreme poverty levels, poor education, and lack of healthcare do not help the situation, and all of this begins with people living in these remote areas having to travel far just to find clean water necessary for survival.

Health & Hygiene

Most people in developed areas underestimate the importance of basic hygiene, as many residents of rural areas in Honduras end up suffering from completely preventable diseases. Their downfall is the lack of access to hand washing facilities with reliable clean water. Poor hygiene habits lead to a higher than average number of people falling ill more frequently. Some of Healing Water’s solutions can really come in handy here. First, we focus on analyzing the situation and installing appropriate water filtration solutions for the area, or we can look into simpler solutions like providing hand washing devices similar to the tippy tap. This will help clean up the existing water supply, so the people of Honduras will see fewer sick people overall. We don’t stop there, since we ensure healthy habits prevail by offering health and hygiene training courses for the people of the community.

Schools & Education

Water scarcity arguably affects children worse than anyone else. Some children and their families go days without bathing, washing their hands, or obtaining clean water to drink or use for cooking. Children are often responsible for spreading germs faster than other age groups, meaning schools are hot spots for illness and disease. Even when healthy children attend school, they frequently show up hungry or thirsty, making them more prone to distraction. Without being able to learn effectively, many kids in Honduras lack proper education or simply struggle to keep up or attend school at all. This contributes to a cycle of poverty in the country, which is why it is so paramount to provide kids with clean water and food, to stop the cycle in its tracks.

Access to Doctors

With many people falling ill from dehydration and contaminated water, you would think the healthcare system would be plenty available, but unfortunately, this is not the case in all areas of Honduras. Due to poor management and oversight of the healthcare system in the country, over a million residents do not have access to healthcare. This number is a reflection of the low number of physicians in the country, particularly once again in rural areas.

Solutions to the Honduras Water Struggle

Where there is water, there is improvement in human lives. The situation in Honduras may seem beyond repair, but this is simply not the case! We at Healing Waters International seek to help the people of Honduras and regions all over the world by providing solutions to make clean water more readily available to even the most remote communities.

While larger-scale solutions will need to take place within the Honduran government, there are still ways we can help communities immediately! We examine the unique problems facing areas dealing with a water crisis to find the best solutions to purify water, supply water to all, and educate people on hygiene and how to keep the water clean. Healing Waters seeks to find unique solutions that will best serve each community, no two of our water solution projects are the same. Best of all, we help bring clean water to these regions while allowing them to take ownership of their own water business once we depart.

Water scarcity issues in Honduras heavily affect rural areas, but luckily our solutions can make an immediate difference. All parts of the world struggle with the water crises, that’s why we don’t believe in borders when it comes to providing clean water for all.
