Health and Hygiene Education is a major part of our holistic WASH model. Not only is it a great outreach tool for our project partners, but it truly does have an impact on the health and vitality of attendees. Community members are often introduced to information that has never been shared with them—truths that change their everyday lives.
This past year has been a huge year for our Biblically-based Health & Hygiene Program. Since July 2016, we have developed new materials, a new training model, and have now hired paid Health and Hygiene Staff in Haiti, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.
We have already implemented our new and improved Children’s Program in all four countries and it has been a huge success. The program is fun, simple, interactive, and focused on putting into practice habits that will improve health. The program consists of six classes that cover six topics: The Body Needs Water to Live, Safe and Unsafe Water, How Germs Make us Sick, Handwashing, Personal Hygiene, and most recently, Nutrition!
More importantly, these children are learning that they were created in the image of God and are “fearfully and wonderfully made” from Psalm 139. These truths, combined with the tips that improve health, are having a major impact on these children’s quality of life!
The feedback from local trainers and project partners is that the new program is easy to navigate and everyone is excited to implement it. And more importantly, the kids are excited to participate and they are putting into practice all the things they are learning in the classes. The best part may be this—the children aren’t stopping there. They are using their take-home worksheets to teach their parents and young siblings what they learned, and are even demanding clean water at home and at school.
By providing access to affordable clean water as well as Health and Hygiene Education, we’re ending the Global Water Crisis one community at a time.
