The Eglise de Dieu en Christ de la nouvelle Alliance church of 400 people located in Tabarre, Haiti has been providing clean water to its community for almost three years now. We sat down with Wilner Sejousana, the water store operator, and Nadine Louis Pierre Saby, to hear from them about how safe water is changing their community.
Wilner, who was busily multitasking as he operated the water store, noted that he was present for the inauguration of the Healing Waters International water project 3 years ago. He explained that the community members were beyond excited to be the first to drink the clean water and the arrival of the water system had triggered an awakening in the community regarding the link between water and personal health.
In the past, when church leaders held an annual health clinic, many people arrived suffering from serious infections. Now, these people are drinking clean water and their water-borne illnesses are almost completely eradicated! Encouraged by this success, the leaders are focusing their time and energy on developing a Health & Hygiene strategy that will reach the broader community. Nadine is very excited about this opportunity!
According to Nadine, Health & Hygiene training events conducted in the church have already reached around 50 young women and children who have committed to duplicating the training in their own homes and communities. She believes the program will only become stronger. “The work will not stop,” she matter-of-factly stated.
Nadine’s simple statement speaks volumes about the empowerment that is continuing to happen around Haiti. Often viewed as a country of “hand-outs” and disaster relief, there is frequently a misconception that the people of Haiti can’t help themselves. We fully disagree.
Our work in partnering with communities like Tabarre is to resource and empower people to bring about holistic long-lasting change in their communities. Leaders like Wilner and Nadine are gifted, dedicated, determined, and hard-working individuals who are bringing change within their community and in their country. In Nadine’s word, they will not stop until they have won the fight against dirty water and the injustice it imposes on people.
There are thousands more in Haiti who need access to safe drinking water. They are smart, capable people who don’t need a hand-out. They need to be resourced and equipped to create a holistic, sustainable safe-water solution that not only creates economic benefit for their community, but is a tangible expression of the love of Jesus. Together, Healing Waters and the people of Haiti are helping entire communities around Haiti to “eat, drink, and be merry!”
We invite you to act today to join Nadine and Wilner and the nation of Haiti so that they can change their futures through safe water and thanks to a generous donor, your gift can be doubled up to $60k to reach even more communities in Haiti!
